the center where there is Jewish life.
I know Jewish people like Chinese
food. It doesn't mean the memorial
has to be placed next to a Chinese
restaurant, and that's what he's plan-
ning to do."
Irene Stein, a HMC docent, is dis-
appointed.
"It was wonderful that the HMC
was part of the JeN,ish community
campus. When we brought the kids
in, we showed
them what a
Jewish commu-
nity is like,"
she said. "We
showed them
that even
though they
were two sepa-
rate entities, we
bring all our
people in here
— young peo-
ple, old people, Emery Klein
handicapped
people — it's a
center for our community, and this is
a part of it."
Stuart Brickner, a West Bloomfield
trustee, regrets the HMC decisi n.
"It's a loss to the city, but it's also a
loss to the HMC," he said. "We have
this unique site that embodies the
Jewish community. The natural beau-
ty with the trees and the campus-
type setting, they're losing that by
going to this commercial district and
putting it up like a shopping center."
Vicki Barnett, a Farmington Hill!,
City Council member, expresses the
views of many.
"It's a world-class museum that
tells the timeless story of man's inhu
manity to man in a very touching,
moving way," she said. "As a Jewish
person, I'm just thrilled that we can
bring this kind of cultural facility
into Farmington Hills, because it's so
important that people remember."
As a Jew, she also somewhat regrets
the HMC's move away from the
Applebaum Campus.
"On the one hand, I'm excite
about the expansion at the JCC," she –
said. "On the other hand, I'm sad-
dened that the JCC expansion could
not accommodate the expansion of
the HMC. The site could not accom-
modate both." ❑

With assistance from the JVS Jewish Educational Loan Service
(JELS), Joshua is one step closer to realizing his life goal - to
become Rabbi Joshua Hearshen. He's already an MSU graduate
and looks forward to attending the rabbinical program at the
University of Judaism in Los Angeles this fall. Joshua is
appreciative of JVS and the Hebrew Free Loan Association for
making this possible. Through the JELS program, these
organizations provide Jo;hua and other Jewish students with
interest-free loans to attend undergraduate, technical or
graduate schools. Helping young people further their education
is at the heart of how Jewish values make dreams come true.
