Traveling off-season or off- peak, coupled with a senior discount, can mean big savings on a vacation. The book describes specialized, over- 55 tour groups combining travel with education, community service and adventures. In his book, Singer cites his experi- ence with Elderhostel. A typical five- night program in the United States, including registration, classes, room and board, and,extra-curricular activi- ties, averages under $450, with classes on a wide variety of subjects. Some courses even include field trips for those who are more mobile. Help! explains that with programs such as Elderhostel, travel .is often not included, but it offers tips on how to get the best rate for airfare, such as being flexible and persistent in the quest to locate discount seats. "This is an extremely useful book to have," says Dorothy Creecy, a Southfield senior. She purchased her copy after attending Singer's book signing at the Southfield Library. "While I haven't had to use it yet, it gives me a feeling of security to know I have such a complete reference book." Lois Hitchcock, chair of the Southfield Commission on Senior Adults, concurs. "People are always looking for resources, and often times giving someone a phone number once isn't good enough if they aren't ready to use the information." While some seniors are fast learners, she notes that there are still many sen- iors who are resistant to using resources like the Internet, and rely more heavily on tools such as refer- ence books. When he's not producing his tele- vision series or writing books, Singer serves on the Elder Advisors Research Committee at Wayne State University's Institute of Gerontology. Ei Help!
