or "officials" on important matters. If
they are wrong, you may be the one to
suffer. Get advice from someone who
is competent and has all of the facts.
In one case, Kass points out, someone
forgot to sign a life insurance be...Alci-
ary designation form on the signature
line, but printed his name in another
box. It was believed the prior benefici-
ary should get the money because the
form was "unsianed." But under the
law, the printed name was sufficient
for the new beneficiary to receive the
insurance proceeds.
• Keep the beneficiaries informed.
You can avoid many suspicions by
keeping people up to date and, in
appropriate cases, getting them to sign
off on important decisions so they
•
can't question them later.
• Don't pay estate expenses out of
your own pocket. Keep track of
expenses so they can be paid out of
the estate. And keep track of your
time in handling an estate, and con-
sider taking a fee for your work — it's
legal. But address the issue of fees up
front and get everyone's approval in
advance.
A member of Adat Shalom
Synagogue, Kass is active in several
Jewish charitable organizations and
civic groups and does a great deal of
free legal work for them, including
lectures on estate and tax topics. He is
planning a Jewish supplement to That
Do We Do Now? in the form of a
directory of who to call, what to rea•,
where to go, etc., when a Jewish per-
son dies in the community.
It would include information on
Jewish law and customs on death and
dying, locations of Jewish cemeteries,
names of Jewish grief support groups,
sources for kosher shivah trays, what
to do with Jewish religious articles,
lists of Jewish charities, names of
resale shops to donate the deceased's
clothing and furniture, and related
topics. Li
