Intervention
Not Needed

Mother-Of-P

Last week you ran an article describ-
ing the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations' program urging mem-
bers to donate all or part of their tax-
rebate checks to their local congrega-
tions, which, in turn, will decide to
which charity the donations will be
made ("Tax-Cut Tzedakah," June 15,
page 18).
I heartily endorse the concept of
sending a message to Washington
about this questionable new tax
"reduction" law.
In fact, I am in the process of
organizing a similar movement. Let
me suggest, however, that we don't
need another layer of bureaucracy.
The message is KISS: Keep It Simple,
Sir.
Let's encourage everyone who feels
that they can afford to donate all or
part of their $300 or $600 tax rebate
to do so, but directly to the charity of
their choice. There's no need for any
additional intervention in what ought
to be a very simple process.
Let the government know how we
feel about this phony tax cut and
encourage the ultra-wealthy to donate
a significant proportion of their major
tax reductions.

I very much enjoyed reading the latest
Torah commentary ("A Pessimistic
Nature Affects One's Self-Image,"
June 18, page 65), which, of course,
deals with the sending by Moses of 12
spies to see the land of Canaan, our
promised land.
The commentary sang the praises of
the founding fathers and mothers of
the State of Israel, my own father and
mother among them; thank you in
their name.
It may be of interest to mention
that the giants of whom the 10 spies
spoke are also referred to as nefillin2, a
term often used to describe the afore-
mentioned generation of founders,
Israel's own greatest generation.
