In his compilation of prayers to be
read at Adat Shalom healing services,
Rabbi Herbert Yoskowitz uses a vari-
ety of sources.
Typically, he incorporates those
written by himself and previous
attendees with others composed by
experts in spiritual healing, including
this year's Dr. Fred Benderoff
Memorial Healing Lecture
guest speaker, Rabbi Simkha
Y. Weintraub.
As rabbinical director of
the New York Jewish Healing
Center and the National
Center for Jewish Healing,
both programs of the Jewish
Board of Family and
Children's Services in New York City,
the rabbi brings expertise in numer-
ous areas to the bimah of Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
Ordained at the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America in
New York, he also holds a master's
degree in clinical social work from
Columbia University in New York.
Rabbi Weintraub will address
"Healing of Soul, Healing of Body,"
taken from the tide of his book,
(Jewish Lights Publishing, 1994) a
compilation of 10 psalms of healing
by the 18th century Chassid, Reb
Nahman of Bratslay.
"During the program, I will give
out Jewish texts, including ancient
classical rabbinic material, as a trigger
for discussion and analysis," he says.
Using Jewish traditional text and
ritual, he will look at Jewish tradition
and Jewish communal resources that
address Jewish spiritual healing.
"When the Jewish healing move-
ment began," he says, "Jews dealt
with physical illness."
He says, "Now I address the spiri-
tual needs of Jews who are ill, their
families, friends, caregivers, rabbis
and health care professionals.
"When it applies, I use Jewish sto-
ries or wordless chants or text case
examples. There are a lot of spiritual
resources that can extend generally to

emotional or psychological suffering,
and there are some that are particu-
larly helpful more for specific chal-
lenges and to see how we can
respond to people who are ill and
bereaved."
The rabbi's private practice
includes confronting issues of chron-
ic illness, infertility and bereavement.
He says, "Not just the patient suffers,
the family does, too."
While here, Rabbi Weintraub will

also bring his rabbinic training semi-
nar to a meeting of Michigan rabbis.
The rabbinic program is co-spon-
sored by the Michigan Region
Rabbinical Assembly, of which Rabbi
Yoskowitz is president; the Michigan
Board of Rabbis, with Adat Shalom
Rabbi Daniel Nevins serving as pres-
ident; and the Jewish Hospice and
Chaplaincy Network in Southfield.
"The workshop offers advances in
spiritual meaning and purpose,
Rabbi Yoskowitz says. "For the rab-
bis, I hope to focus on Jewish spiri-
tual assessment," Rabbi Weintraub
says.
Overall, he says, "Everybody may
not benefit from everything present-
ed. Depending on what somebody is
going through, I try to offer a piece
of Jewish tradition that is going to be
helpful." ❑
