Fact-A-Day

in the business...

Since 1972

Cambridge, England, to
assert: "The inescapable
conclusion [is] that the
Shapira manuscripts were
genuine." Was Shapira's
find in fact a treasure?
We'll never know. Before
his suicide, Shapira sold
the manuscript for a few
dollars to an antique book-
seller. After that, it disap-
peared.
(For more information,
read John Allegro's The
Shapira Affair, published in
1965.)

text Pirkei Avot (Ethics of
Our Fathers), "A Jew is dis-
tinguished by three charac-

benevolence."

#6) In the 1920s and 1930s,
one of the most popular
fighters at Madison Square
Gardens was "Kid" Berg,
also known as Judah
Bergman. Born in London,
the "Kid" was welterweight
champ of 1931. He had a
pretty unusual gimmick,
which won him plenty of
Jewish fans: his fighting
getup included a tallit.

#7)Two of Israel's greatest
figures, Chaim Weizmann
and Ze'ev Jabotinsky, stood
on opposite sides of the
fence when it came to
Zionism. (Weizmann opted
for the more moderate route,
which involved cooperating
with the British; Jabotinsky
was outspoken, advocating
what he called an "activist"
program that included mass
immigration and the cre-
ation of a Jewish army.) -
Publicly, the two men often
argued over political matters,
yet privately they got along.
In his autobiography, Trial
and Error, Weizmann
described Jabotinsky as
"rather ugly, immensely
attractive, well-spoken,
warm-hearted, generous,
always ready to help a com-
rade in distress; all of these

qualities were, however,
overlaid by a certain touch
of the rather theatrically
chivalresque, a certain
queer and irrelevant
knightliness which was
not at all Jewish."
