scar Cook was always con-
cerned ... about his family,
about the Jewish community
and about the fate of the
environment.
To his extended family
of children, grandchildren,
nieces and nephews, he was
a role model and father fig-
ure, always willing to listen
and become involved.
On Father's Day, June
17, Mr. Cook, 87, of
Farmington Hills, died
after a four-year struggle
with kidney disease. He
Oscar Cook
had been on hemodialysis
three times a week.
Mr. Cook's desire to help others
didn't stop at his doorstep. He was
inspired by the mitzvah of tikkun olam,
repairing the world. He was a longtime
B'nai B'rith leader, an active volunteer
and an early advocate of recycling. And
he wasn't above snapping off an opin-
ionated letter to an editor or politician.
"The key to his whole life was
tikkun olam," said Jeanette Cook, his
wife of 61 years.
After serving with the Navy in the
Pacific during World War II, Mr.
Cook joined his father-in-law, Morris
Teitel, at his business, the Relish Shop,
at the Gratiot Central Market in
Detroit's Eastern Market district.
Mr. Cook loved to kibbitz with the
other merchants as well as his cus-
tomers. He also developed a wholesale
business, distributing bulk relishes,
pickles, potato salad, sauerkraut,
coleslaw, jellies and other delicacies to
local restaurants.
His retirement in the late 1970s
allowed him to volunteer extensively.
He would deliver Meals on Wheels,
drive others to medical appointments
and collect recyclables. He posted a
sign in the left rear window of his Ford
Escort offering to collect used batter-
ies.
"He had very strong feelings about
taking care of our planet and not wast-
ing," said daughter Fran Cook of West
Bloomfield. "He lived his values —
there was nothing hypocritical about
him."
In 1999, Mr. Cook was honored by
the Great Lakes Region of B'nai B'rith
for his service to both the adult and
youth organizations. He was a member
for over 50 years of the Marshall
Suburban Tikvah Lodge, serving as
president and recruiting many new
members. He and Jeanette were also
honored by Jewish Women
International and Israel Bonds.
Son Gerald Cook of
Farmington Hills is trustee
of the Ben N. Teitel
Charitable Trust, named
after its founder, Jeanette
Cook's brother. Oscar and
Ben were very close and in
recognition of Oscar and
Jeanette's altruistic spirit,
several projects have been
named in their honor:
• The Jewish Vocational
Service's JOIN intern pro-
gram to interest young
adults in Jewish communal work,
• The B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization's (BBYO) International
Leadership Study in Israel program,
• An endowment fund for BBYO
advisers to visit Israel,
• Hadassah's radicbiology research
lab in Jerusalem and
• Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology's Perach student activities
building in .Haifa.
For his 75th birthday, 100 trees
were planted in Israel in Mr. Cook's
honor. "He loved trees and he loved
Israel," said son Gerald.
"Dad leaves a rich legacy," said son
Martin Cook of West Bloomfield. "He
lives on in every sunset."
Mr. Cook is survived by his wife,
Jeanette Cook; sons and daughters-
in-law, Gerald and Barbara Cook,
Martin and Carol Cook; daughter
and son-in-law, Frances Cook and
David Wiener; grandchildren,
Cheryl Cook, Matthew Cook and
Michelle Rowe, Elizabeth and
Jeremy Kahn, Stacey Cook, Adam
Cook, Rebecca Wiener, Sara Wiener
Brad and Jill Manhoff, Jyll Manhoff;
great-grandson, Jordan Manhoff and
sisters-in-law, Clara Cook and
Sandra Teitel.
Interment was at Adat Shalom
Memorial Park. Contributions may be
made to Great Lakes Region of B'nai
B'rith, Jewish Vocational Service's
JOIN intern program, Michigan
Region B'nai B'rith Yowl
Organization, Jewish National Fund of
Gift of Life. Arrangements by Ira
