overwhelmed by it all.
First, Mike Reid,
Grammy-winning song-
writer and former Cincinnati Bengals
defensive tackle, sang a song to him
while playing a piano that looked
smaller than the vocalist.
Then former Brooklyn Dodgers
pitcher Ralph Branca and former
New York Giants batter Bobby
Thompson — the pair responsible
for "the shot heard 'round the
world," the pennant-winning homer
for the Giants in 1951, joined in
with a duet of their own.
Schaap, sports journalist and movie
reviewer, was being honored at the
11th annual Hank Greenberg
Memorial Golf & Tennis Invitational at
Tam O'Shanter Country Club in West
Bloomfield on June 11. He has been
the long-time master of ceremonies for
the annual Greenberg event and has
brought in many of the sports stars
each year in memory of the Tigers star.

The nationally known celebrities
who attended this week included foot-
ball players Paul Hornung and Jerry
Kramer, baseball players George Foster
and Darrell Evans, and Detroit Tigers
manager Phil Garner.

Koufax Magnet

The guest star of the event was
Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher
Sandy Koufax, one of the most domi-
nant players in major league history.
Swarmed by autograph-seekers and
local media almost immediately after
his last putt on the golf course, he
patiently signed baseballs and score-
cards, and chatted — briefly — with
reporters.
"I came for Dick Schaap, and Steve
Greenberg [Hank Greenberg's son] is a

friend, and for the fun of it, he said.
"We're all having a good time."
The event, presented by the
Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation,
raised more than S100,000 for the
Hank Greenberg Memorial
Oncology Fund at the Detroit
Medical Center. El
