Left: Christina Ricci: "Suzie is a watcher, and doesn't have much dialogue, which suited me just fine. I would rather express emotions without speaking." During a trip to Moscow, Potter trekked to the suburbs and rang a door- bell with a scrap of paper in hand. She had tracked down a friend's lost Jewish relatives; some time later, she attended the family reunion in London. "We were all in tears," Potter recalls. "I felt like I had become part of this incredible, historical tapestry." ❑ The Man Who Cried, rated R, opens today at the Maple Art Theatre in Bloomfield Township. For instance, Hans Frank, the gover- nor-general of occupied Poland, was so notoriously corrupt that his subordi- nates came up with a pun: "In the West, there is France, and in the East, Frank is getting rich.", While programs about the Holocaust are common, this minis- eries is recommended for serious stu- dents of the mind-set of the perpetra- tors of the "Final Solution." ❑ Hitler's Holocaust will air nightly June 18 21, starting at 9 p.m., on the History Channel. In no time at all, Suzie (Christina Ricci) is befriended by a gold-digging Russian beauty (Cate Blanchett), and they go to work for impresario Felix Perlman in his new opera company. Lola has her eye on an imperious Italian opera singer with Fascist leanings, Dante (John Turturro). But the sparkle and status of high culture has less appeal for Suzie after she meets a taciturn Gypsy, Cesar (Johnny Depp), and his musician friends. At some profound level, she con- nects with these earthy, perse- cuted wanderers. Suzie's only connection to her own roots, though, is a creased photograph of her father. When her landlady mutters some vaguely familiar Yiddish words, Suzie eagerly strikes up a friendship. As she awakens to who she is, and as she gradually becomes more conscious of her place in the world — aided by the presence of Nazi soldiers in the streets of 1940 Paris — Suzie realizes that assimilation is always an act of choice. But after years of being involuntarily cut off from her roots, there's no way she's willing to live in limbo again. Potter lavishes the Paris scenes with luscious costumes, striking images and acres of gorgeous music. The Argentinian-born Jewish com- poser Osvaldo Golijov scored the film. The inclusion of numerous Gypsy tunes not only illumi- nates the gulf between Cesar and Dante's worlds but serves as a pointed reminder that the Nazis did not succeed in wip- ing out Gypsy culture. Unfortunately, The Man Who Cried succumbs to melo- drama in resolving the various Paris plot strands. Nonetheless, there is much beauty and resonance in Suzie's search for her Jewish roots, her family and herself. And, of course, there is the pleasure of glimpsing van- ished ways of life.
