T
he original meaning of the
word ray or rabbi, was
"teacher" — a highly respect-
ed educator who willingly
shared his knowledge with others.
In the tradition of
Rabbi Akiva and
other sages of the
Talmud, Judah Isaacs,
executive director of
the Agency for Jewish
Education, has
earned the title of
"rabbi." The honor
was announced June
Rabbi Isaacs
6 at the AJE's 82nd
annual meeting.
The event also marked the installa-
don of the AJE's 2001-2002 slate of
officers, headed by Arthur M. Horwitz
of West Bloomfield, president. Also
installed were Susie Citrin of
Birmingham and Susie Leemaster of
Franklin, vice presidents; Gayle Burstein
of Bloomfield Hills, treasurer; and Dr.
Joan Lessen Firestone of Bloomfield
Township, secretary.
Horwitz, publisher of the Jewish
News and president of Jewish
Renaissance Media, said, "This is an
exciting time to be involved in the deliv-
ery of Jewish education in this commu-
nity, because Jewish education is at the
top of our priority list — and this is not
true in all communities."
He summarized his goals for the next
two years as "teaching, technology,
teamwork and tumeling," by which he
meant a vigorous, no-holds-barred ques-
tioning of existing ways of doing things.
Leaving the AJE's top spot after two
years is James Jonas, an executive with
Redico, a real estate development and
investment firm.
"Jim has an incredible knowledge and
insight into Jewish education," said
Rabbi Isaacs, "and his presence is felt
every day in our beautiful new offices on
the third floor of the Federation
Building."
Jonas also revamped the AJE employ-
ee handbooks and attended nearly every
AJE subcommittee meeting.
"And you haven't seen the last of me,"
the former president warned.
Even AJE staffers were completely
surprised and delighted to learn that
Judah Isaacs had
become a rabbi, said
Lisa Soble Siegmann,
director of the AJE's
Jewish Experiences
For Families.
"When they made
the announcement,
you could hear
everybody whisper-
ing, 'Did you know?
Did you know?"

rabbinic title after exhaustive private
tutoring by a rabbi as well as experi-
ence in teaching. These nonpulpit rab-
bis do not follow a set curriculum of
study and may not perform at certain
ceremonial occasions, Rabbi Isaacs
said.
In his keynote address, Rabbi Jan
Katzew, director of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations'
department of Jewish Education,
quoted from the first chapter of Pirkei
Avot (Ethics of the Fathers): "Select a
master teacher for yourself; acquire a
colleague for study. When you assess
people, tip the balance in their favor."
Each part of this advice is important,
Rabbi Katzew said.
"Every community, every teacher, has
something different to offer," he said.
"The trick is finding within the commu-
nityyour resources and developing them
to your best ability"
To earn his new tide, Rabbi Isaacs,
37, found himself a teacher in Rabbi
Yehudah Bakst of Yeshiva Gedolah of
Greater Detroit.
A native of Queens, N.Y., Rabbi
Isaacs attended Queens College and
Yeshiva University's Wurzeiler School of
Social Work. He came to Detroit as
head of the AJE in 1993. ❑
