Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres,
Irvin D. Reid, Max Fisher and David
Hermelin met last May at the Franklin
home of Sherman, a member of the
Detroit Federation Board of Governors.

three years ago, according to state of
Michigan figures, WSU had 47 per-
cent of undergraduate credit hours
taught by part-timers, compared to 24
percent, the median in 15 other
Michigan public universities. But Reid
has selected administrators who agree
with the AAUP's concerns, and the
union is cautiously optimistic that
change will occur.

Jewish Studies Classes

Edith Covensky says about her
Hebrew, Israeli culture and Bible stud-
ies classes at WSU, where she has
more non-Jewish students than Jews.
"We co-exist beautifully." A recent
class had seven Jewish students and
seven Arab students.
Covensky enjoys the variety of stu-
dents she teaches. In her Hebrew class
this spring, each student had a differ-
ent reason for attending.
Doug Mathian of Detroit, a psy-
chology major, was interested in the
Kabbala (Jewish mysticism) and how
it relates to Jungian techniques.
Michael Shamat, considering interna-
tional law or business, is a Greek
Orthodox Palestinian whose mother is
American. "Jerusalem is made up of
three religions," he said, "and I'd like
to get a sense of all three."
Olga Mednick of Southfield, a
Russian Jew, and Josie Randazzo of
Warren, who recently learned her
father was Jewish, wanted to reconnect
to their Jewish roots.
Colleen Allen of Farmington Hills
was a WSU student who went on the
Zippori dig last year. She now wants
to live in Israel:
"Students are not coming to our
classes because they're easy classes about
something they know," says Professor
Weinberg, who teaches Jewish history
and Holocaust classes. "They're taking
