WEST BLOOMFIELD
ewish renewal activists have
been involved in Internet dis-
cussion groups for years, but
their presence on the World
Wide Web has been scanty.
One exception: the home page of
the Shalom Center in Philadelphia,
one of the beacons of the movement.
Let's face it; Jewish renewalists are
talky. They don't skimp on words; put
a bunch of them in a room, and it'll
sound more like a graduate seminar
than a shul.
That pretty much sums up the
Shalom Center Web outpost. There's
tons of stuff here, but a lot of casual
visitors will find it a little daunting.
A "what's new" section nicely
illustrates the unusual mix of
activism and spirituality of the
Renewalists; one article deals with
"The `Tahmay' Question: When the
Sacred- Candle Casts a Narrow
Light," while another deals with
"Telephone Workers, Overwork and
Free Time."
An attractive home page offers a
handful of choices, divided into two
IT
Events
general areas: "Worlds of Action" and
"Worlds of Spirit."
In the first, you'll find sections on
peace, justice and environmentalism.
Each section is just a collection of
links to articles, many written by
renewal guru Rabbi Arthur Waskow,
the center's director. Rabbi Waskow's
ubiquity is a good thing; he has a fas-
cinating take on the connections
between Judaism and social and envi-
ronmental activism.
A typical article: "Justice and Eco-
Kashrut." Another is an extended ser-
mon by Rabbi Waskow on the mean-
ing of the high-school killings in
Columbine, Colo.
The spirituality half of the site is
similarly laced with Rabbi Waskow's
sometimes fascinating, always dense
discussions for "Godwrestlers.”
There's also an extensive collection
of links to other sites — Renewal
organizations, peace dialogue groups,
environmentalists and the like.
The site is intelligently laid out,
without the organizational hype that
so distracting on many other Jewish
sites.
