of this. We can only trust that in God's
own good time, we will understand."
"The level of faith of the family is
unbelievable," says Rabbi Avraham
Jacobovitz of Machon L'Torah/The
Jewish Learning Network of Michigan
in Oak Park, where Alex Saltsman is a
supporter and close friend of the rabbi.
"Imagine the parents of a young
baby killed, standing by his graveside
saying a blessing with the same intent
as they would over something good.
This is because we know it is bad only
in the sense of the present and that
ultimately God's planning is for good."
Gary Torgow, president of Yeshiva
Beth Yehudah in Southfield, calls the
infant's death, "a terrible local and
national Jewish tragedy. Jerry is a strong
Zionist, which makes this all the more
tragic. He and his family are wonderful,
wonderful Jewish pioneers."
The incident surrounding Yehuda's
death incited rioting and arson from
Israeli settlers in a Palestinian village
outside of Jerusalem.
A four-hour funeral for the infant
was held June 11 in Shilo, with thou-
sands in attendance, including Israeli
Prime Minister Arid Sharon, who had
also visited the family when Yehuda
was hospitalized.
Speaking at the funeral, Sharon said,
"I have come to cry, to cry with you
together. I saw you praying with devo-
tion, and I also prayed in my heart
together with you. How can they mur-
der a baby? How can they do this?
Only the wild and unrestrained incite-
ment of the Palestinian Authority,
which stands behind and activates this
terrorism, leads to these horrific acts.
"The responsibility for the security
of every child in Israel is upon my
shoulders and I feel its weight. I feel
its weight, yet my shoulders have not
become weak because I know that we
must not allow our spirit to fall.
"If we ask every day, 'How much
longer?' we will lose. But if we remain
firm and grit our teeth and continue;
even when the tears choke our throats,
we will win. And we will win. We
have stood up to difficult situations
and we have overcome our enemies
and we will do this again in the future.
"But my heart is pained at the fact
that little Yehuda will not be with us
when we arrive in Eretz Yisrael"(the
land of Israel) at the menuchah
v'hanachalah, the rest and the inheri-
tance. And we will get there. May his
memory be a blessing."
For the family, Yehuda's Uncle
Joseph Bricker of Oak Park says, "This
is a tragedy no words can express." El
