Hillel fund-raiser celebrates those who made the school strong.

I

t cost only $20 to win a
guaranteed prize from
Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit's
annual dinner and silent auction
May 25 at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek.
The only catch — each gift was
hidden inside a paper bag, tied
shut by the string of a helium
balloon.
Val Sirlin of Bloomfield Hills
won a $350 gift certificate from
Sayles Portraits in Birmingham.
West Bloomfield resident Susie

Goldenberg took home Hillel T-
shirts in every size. Sharon Gene
of West Bloomfield generously
rewrapped her prize — a stuffed
Bananas in Pajamas toy — and
gave it back for resale.
Meanwhile, bidders in the
silent and live auctions won
prizes including a weekend's use
of a BMW, cruises, home remod-
eling and children's toys. The cul-
mination of the school's fund-
raising season, the auction
grossed $46,000, said Marianne
Bloomberg, Hillel's development
director.
Other than raising money,
Hillel's annual dinner and auc-

tion honors members of the
Hillel community.
Recipients of the 2001 Dream
Maker Award were Arlene and
David Margolin of Bloomfield
Township. Among the first fami-
lies to send their children to the
school, the Margolins volun-
teered in many ways, including
chairing the first Annual
Concert. David Margolin served
on the board of directors and was
vice president of the executive
committee.
Their son Steven Margolin of
Orchard Lake, a former Hillel
president, described his parents as
"caring people who do for others.

"They believe in the impor-
tance of Jewish education, not
only with their hearts but with
all their actions," Margolin said.
Charlotte Tessler, who died in
January 2000, was remembered
by the school with its 2001
Rabbi Jacob Segal Award. The
first chairman of the Hillel
Alumni Association, she served
on both the board of directors
and the executive committee.
"We gave our children a gift by
sending them to Hillel," she fre-
quently said.
The Tessler family has created
the Charlotte Tessler Fund for
Alumni Affairs in her memory. ❑
