Community
Being a chaplain last summer, he
says, had an impact on him spiritually
and emotionally.
"It
taught me
more
about the
impor-
tance of
the mitz-
vah of
bicur
cholim
(visiting
the sick)
than I ever
thought I
could
learn. I
hope to be Rabbi Jonathan Berkun
able to give in the Shaarey Zedek
comfort to sanctuary.
the sick
and to
their families by helping them to feel
the hope, care and love from our
community and our tradition."

An amateur singer and guitar player,
Rabbi Berkun has sung in collegiate
and professional a cappella groups in
New York for the past 10 years.
"I have used these musical abilities to
enhance worship services when appro-
priate, especially Havdalah services," he
says. "I hope to have the opportunity
to continue to do so as the clergy and
members of Shaarey Zedek explore
new ways to celebrate life through
prayer and spiritual encounters."
Also a singer, Rabbi Lauren Eichler
Berkun has been a private voice
instructor. In Detroit, she will take on
the role of Midwest Rabbinic Fellow
for JTS, a program she says enables
"Conservative lay people throughout
the country to experience the critical
and sophisticated Torah learning that
takes place at JTS in their homes and
offices.
"I will be setting up one-on-one and
small group classes with lay leaders
who are interested in deepening their
Torah learning."
Rabbi Berkun looks forward to being
part of the Shaarey Zedek community.
"One of the greatest gifts of being a
rabbi is the ability to help guide indi-
viduals and families through the joy
and sorrow of life. I look forward to
the privilege of joining other people in
their journeys through life by marking
life's meaningful moments with the
wisdom and rituals of our Jewish tradi-
tion."
