Brett is a student at Berkshire Middle
School in Beverly Hills, while Sean,
Kallie and Brendan attend West Maple
Elementary School. Next year, Brendan
will start at Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit, and Kyra will
attend Congragation Shaarey Zedek's
Beth Hayeled Nursery School.

Professionally Speaking: Neal is a
physician who specializes in physical
rehabilitation for children and adults.
He works at Beaumont Hospital in
Royal Oak and at Hurley Medical

Center in Flint.
Neal is active at Shaarey Zedek,
where he's a board member, and
at Congregation Beth Israel in
Flint. He attends morning and
evening services at both syna-
gogues. He is a chairman of the
Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's
Synagogue 2000 and supports
Federation's Alliance for Jewish
Education.
Karen, a full-time homemaker,
volunteers for numerous organi-
zations. The new chairman of
JEFF (Jewish Experiences For
Families), she is also education
chairman of Shaarey Zedek and parent
representative for Beth Hayeled Nursery
School. She is on the board of the syna-
gogue's sisterhood and chairs the sister-
hood Shabbat luncheon committee.
Karen created and is a member of the
Federation's Beit Midrash Program, a
study group comprising Orthodox,
Conservative and Reform Jews. She is a
member of Federation's Shalom Detroit
Committee, which welcomes new resi-
dents to the area, and the Leadership
Continuum, a Federation group that

develops future leaders in the commu-
nity. She serves on the boards of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America, Alyn Hospital in Jerusalem
and the Conservative movement's
Camp Ramah.

How They Met: Karen and Neal grew
up in Southfield, where Neal was the
best friend of Karen's brother, Bruce
Rubenstein. When they met, Karen was
in 7th grade and Neal was in 9th grade.
"We lived around the block from each
other," Karen says. "I had a crush on Neal,
