away.

Though not a "Jewish" disease, dia=
betes does afflict a disproportionate
number of Jews, especially in their
later years.
Howard Sherizen's grandmother,
Fae Skolnik, had diabetes — a dis-
ease of the endocrine system that
impedes the body's ability to break
down and metabolize sugars and
starches. She's one reason Sherizen
has been a seven-year participant in
the Tour de Cure, a national bicy-
cling event of the American Diabetes
Association to raise funds for
research and services.
This year's Tour will be June 10 at
Island Lake State Recreation Area,
just south of Kensington Metropark.
Seven ride courses are available,
from the seven-mile ride for novices
to the 14-mile mountain bike trail
recommended for expert riders.
Sherizen, an Oak Park amateur
cycling enthusiast, once again will
lead "Team Franklin," a group spon-
sored by the Franklin Fitness &

Racquet Club. As an enticement, all
who sign up for the team will receive
a free week at the club, says Rick
Brode, club president.
To keep the cyclists going, Alan
Linker of Sperber's Kosher Catering
will supply kosher snacks. Corporate
sponsor Outback Steakhouse will
provide participants with a meal fol-
lowing the ride.
Participants are encouraged to
generate personal sponsors for their
ride. Last year, 550 local riders rode
in-the rain, raising more than
$140,000.
Riders of all experience levels
interested in joining Team Franklin
should call Sherizen at (248) 8»-
1010 or the Franklin Fitness &
Racquet Club at (248) 352 - 8000.
Check-in for the seven or 15-mile
rides is at 8:30 a.m., with the ride
beginning at 9. I-2!
