A video presentation included clips of
the rabbi involved in what he loved most:
amily, teaching and Jewish outreach.
"It also included the joy and humor
e brought to life and the passion he
xpressed about the Synagogue
ampus of Living Judaism," says Rabbi
hemtov of the multimillion dollar, 40-
acre religious and educational complex
in West Bloomfield of which Rabbi
Kagan was director of development. An
announcement was made at the service
that the construction start of the cam-

pus was sped up to begin in late July in
honor of the rabbi.
"You couldn't help be close with
him," says Shenkman, a founder of
the Shul, a spiritual center that will be
the first institution built on the cam-
pus that was Rabbi Kagan's dream.
"And you couldn't help but be close
with his wife Roche] and their lovely,
lovely children who have the same
wonderful attitude the rabbi did. His
dedication, hard work and sincerity in
what he believed in made him a most
unusual man. And once you met him,
he was your friend." ❑

institutions," Rabbi Shemtov says. "The
first 12 acres of land is already devel-
oped. The entire infrastructure is in —
the roads, water, parking lot. Now it's
ready for building."
With design plans completed by
Luckenbach-Ziegelman Architects
PLLC in Birmingham, a contract sign-
ing with builders at A.Z. Shmina Inc. in
Livonia was rushed last Friday to assure
its announcement could made at the
tribute service for Rabbi Kagan June 3.
Construction will begin on the Shul,
the first of the campus structures to be
built, in late July.
Rabbi Shemtov says 70 percent of a
needed S12 million has been donated
or pledged toward development of
land and construction of the build-
ings. Plans for the MJI's Jack and

as well as the library have been drawn
up by Luckenbach/Ziegelman and are
ready for review by bidding contrac-
tors for the next construction stage.
"We were ready to start soon anyway,"
Rabbi Shemtov says. "Rabbi Kagan
worked so hard on it. A few days
before he passed away he even asked us
to rush it. We thought we should do it
faster as a special honor to him."
Driving through the land of the
Synagogue Campus of Living Judaism,
it is evident that the Friendship Circle,
the Shul, MP and the Emma Lazaroff
Schaver Judaica Library are only Phase
1 of the dream. Paved roads already
lead to signs marking future sites of an
additional academic college building,
student dormitory, children's early
education and day care center and a
mikvah (ritual bath). 7
