I am pleased to say that at Yeshivat
Akiva, the Holocaust and Zionism are
part of our curriculum. Even though
my family is from Morocco and
Yemen, and had no ties to Europe
during the time of the Shoah, we
know how important it is to remem-
ber the Holocaust and the destruction
of our brethren.
Of equal importance, in my mind,
is the study of the love for Israel.
When studying history in school,
what better experience could a student
have than to see the land itself and
history where it was, and is, made?
As an educator, I know that the best
way to learn is to "live the experi-
ence." By visiting Poland and Israel,
and participating in the March of the
Living, we can see how people can
turn from destruction to construction,
from the darkness of the Holocaust to
the light of Eretz Yisrael [the land of
Israel].
It is of utmost importance to
choose a school carefully when your
children are ready to be educated.
Every school has its own philosophy;
parents should choose the schools
compatible with their own beliefs.
Yeshivat Akiva is proud of its philos-
ophy of teaching the Holocaust
along with Zionism. In fact, 50 per-
cent of the Detroit coalition of the
participating high school students
were from Yeshivat Akiva.
The March of the Living is used as
a learning experience for all of the
children who attend. School studies
continued for those few students
who were unable to attend the
march. Some classes may have been
missed, but there were others to
make up for them. As a teacher at
Akiva, I can tell you that those few
students had my undivided attention
since most of their classmates were
gone.
The children returned from the
trip inspired by all they had experi-
enced. The children who were fortu-
nate enough to be able to participate
in the march know that they have an
opportunity that one million chil-
dren who died in the Holocaust will
never have.
They will never forget this experi-
ence and, in the long run, it will
enhance their lives in a way that a
few additional regular days in a tra-
ditional classroom would never
achieve.
I am proud to be a teacher at
Yeshivat Akiva. I hope that programs

like this one will multiply in , order to
strengthen the Jewish future of our
children here and benefit Jewish chil-
dren everywhere.

Helping Spread
Sun To Seniors

As a senior, I would like to express
thanks to a good man, Jerry
Glassman. He's a man who brings
great joy to seniors who attend his
lovely affairs, usually given at the
Jewish Community Centers in Oak
Park and West Bloomfield ("Spring
Celebration," May 11, page 49).
He brings Sam Barnett and his
orchestra for dancing. Jerry can sing
and dance with the ladies. There are
gifts and a delicious dessert. And it's
gratis. The JCC staff always sets up
and serves — and deserves thanks.
So many wait till folks of this kind
are 80 to recognize them. Let's honor
them when many of us can be there to
wish them well. Bless you, Jerry and
family. May you be with us for better
than 80.

Don't Infringe On
Lawful Gun Owners

Senators John McCain of Arizona and
Joe Lieberman of Connecticut are try-
ing to get the U.S. Senate to target,
once more, law-abiding and honorable
gun-owning citizens ("Deadly
Important," June 1, page 37).
It is not sufficient that gun assaults
and murders are virtually at an all-
time low as gun purchasers increase in
number. These two senators would
have the Senate parade as the 'super
defender of the fictitious terrorized.'
In truth, criminals commit murder
and robbery while ignoring any laws,
stealing and using illegal we:Tons, as
the law-abiding majority labors to fill
out forms of an ever-increasing gov-
ernment bureaucracy.
We protest this waste of time and
treasury. We will not forget what these
senators are doing to us, their citizens.
Support your local police and then
vote the senators out of office.
