The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's second Bernard L. Maas Prize
for Achievement in Jewish Culture and
Continuity recently was awarded to
Deanna Sperka, an Oak Park artist, for
her dedication and contribution to
Jewish life. She won this year's award
category of fine arts.
Sperka is a board member of the
Jewish Community Council and serves
on the Unity Committee of Israel and
the World Jewry Committee. She is a
member of the Zionist Organization of
America and past member of the
Federation/Synagogue Committee.
The yearly prize is intended to recog-
nize outstanding creative achievement
in the arts and humanities as a vital
force in Jewish life and Jewish continu-
ity Consideration for awards go to
working artists, scholars and educators
making a unique contribution to Jewish
continuity, this year through a fine arts
medium. The prize for individuals car-
ries a cash award of $10,000.
Receiving recognition along with
Sperka at the May 16 Federation Board
of Governors meeting were these area
institutions:
• Janice Charach Epstein Gallery,
located in the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield, for overall
excellence.
• Detroit Institute of Arts in Detroit,
for its "Treasures of Jewish Cultural
Heritage," an exhibit from the library of
the Jewish Theological Seminary of
America in New York City.

Golf Outing
Aids- JARC

A group of committed friends have
teamed up to raise money for JARC
(Jewish Association for Residential
Care).
Headed by Mark Rosen and spon-
sored by Liberty Mutual Insurance and
Management Diversified Inc., the sec-
ond annual golf outing will benefit the
Harris Family and Children's Division
of JARC. The outing will be held on
Monday, June 18, at Cherry Creek Golf
Club in Shelby Township.
To join in the fun or sponsor a hole,

The cost is $150 per golfer.
Other planning committee members
are Rosen's wife, Anne, and family
friends, Larry Silver, Wendy
Kohlenberg, Debbie Lusky and Peter
Rosen.
