Hebrew Free Loan

"If thou loan money to My people, thou shalt
not lay upon him interest."
— Exodus 22:24

Interest-free loans? Leave it to God to think of
that one.

Go on, dream ... and let Hebrew Free Loan
Association create the reality.

Since 1895, and without charging interest, this
Federation agency has been helping individuals
in the Jewish community of metropolitan
Detroit ... earn a living ... get an education ...
celebrate a simcha ... and do so much more.
HFLA comes through when a lack of money
makes a situation seem impossible. This tradi-
tion of interest-free loan philanthropy has been
one of the building blocks for Jewish life in
Detroit.

When Jews turn to Hebrew Free Loan
Association for solutions to their financial prob-
lems, staff offer understanding, equality of
treatment and a sincere desire to help. HFLA is
providing solutions for adoption, good health,
a business venture, education, family celebra-

tions, a new or renovated home, living expens-
es and a fresh start. Indeed, some of our com-
munity's nicest success stories started with an
interview at the HFLA offices, and ended with
dreams realized.

Times have changed, but the concept hasn't.
Once, an immigrant would get a loan for a
horse and pushcart. Today, he's more likely to
borrow for a used car to get to a first job.

During the depression, many of our grandpar-
ents or great-grandparents made it through
with a HFLA loan – and paid it back 75 cents at
a time. And they are/were proud to tell about
it. This agency's legacy is giving hope, optimism
and dignity from generation to generation.

Through the years, HFLA has recycled donated
dollars over and over again to assist thousands
of Jews in our community. Helping is the fact
that less than 2 percent of borrowers have
defaulted on their loan.

It's just possible that God knew a good credit
risk when He saw one.
