Matchmaking Not Always Upbeat

Dear Wendy:
I like to play matchmaker and to
introduce single friends to one anoth-
er. Sometimes it works, sometimes it
doesn't. I recently set up one of my
close women friends with a work col-
league; they dated for about six
months, but their relationship ended
in a nasty breakup. Now my friend
won't talk to me. What. should I do?

— Caught in a bind

You know what they say: No good
deed goes unpunished. If you knew
there was something seriously wrong
with your colleague (you were aware
that he was an alcoholic with violent
tendencies, for example) and you did-
n't disclose this in advance, your
friend would have cause to be upset.
If, on the other hand, things just did-
n't work out, your friend is being
ungrateful. In the former case, you
owe your friend an apology; in the
latter, she owes you one.
In either case, you probabl should

recognize that doing others
this kind of favor is a risky
business. Stick to your day
job. (Or make your friends
sign a waiver in advance of a
first dace.)
Dear Wendy:
Do Jews and Christians
believe in the same God?

debate this question with
each other; elsewhere this
debate spills on to the battle-
field.

Dear Wendy:
Our rabbi came as part
of a package. She made it
clear when we hired her that

Let an old friend be your
Michigan-Florida Connection

It is entirely possible that he knows
he is doing a lackluster job and would
willingly step down. But I wouldn't
count on it. Is there not someone in the
community who might be willing to
offer this man a job that he will excel at
or, at the very least, where his failure
will not have such a profound impact?
Depending on how much your rabbi
means to you, your community leaders
may need to put their heads together
and concoct — or underwrite — a new
position for her spouse.

But first consult the contract. If
you discover a linkage clause — tying
the employment of the husband to
his rabbinical wife — you may have
to consider sweetening the offer by
throwing in his own executive wash-
room and a VP title. ❑
