endowed in Michael
Selesny's memory.

Southfield couple was honored at
a breakfast reception for endow-
ing a scholarship at a yeshiva in Israel.
Abe and Myra Selesny created the
Michael Selesny Memorial Scholarship
in memory of their son, Michael, who
had studied at Yeshivat Sha'alvim for
three years. He died of a heart attack
in Israel last year at age 29. He lived
with his wife and four children in
Ramat Bet Shemesh, where he worked
for an Israeli securities corporation
and investment banking firm.
The May 20 reception for the Detroit
Friends of Yeshivat Sha'alvim drew 150
supporters to Young Israel of Southfield.
Founded in 1961, Yeshivat Sha'alvim
was Israel's first hesder yeshiva, or mili-
tary yeshiva. It combines traditional
Torah study with training and active
service in the Israel Defense Force.
Today, Sha'alvim educates 2,500 stu-

dents in various programs, including a
school for overseas students. More than
$1 million of its $8 million annual
budget goes to student.scholarships.
Rabbi Mallen Galinsky, dean of the
yeshiva, presented the tribute. He -
commended the Seles'n for their
community activism, despite having
had their faith tested by "a personal
akaidah," a reference to the biblical
sacrifice of Isaac. The couple are mem-
bers of Young Israel of Southfield.
Their communal activities involve
Yeshivat Akiva, Mikvah Israel, Chesed
Shel Emet (Hebrew Memorial), Amit
and the Southfield zoning board.
The reception also honored Norman
and Fani Adelsberg of Southfield for their
support of the yeshiva. Rabbi Shaiall
Zachariash of Congregation Shomrey
Emunah made the presentation to them.
Upwards of 20 Detroiters are
Sha'alvim alumni, including Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah Executive Director Rabbi Eli
Mayerfeld and Rabbi Reuven Spolter, the
new rabbi of Young Israel of Oak Park
"Yeshivat Sha'alvim was founded on the
principle of Torah im Derech Eretz (Torah
learning combined with worldliness),"
said guest speaker Rabbi Yosef Bechhofer
of Chicago, an alumnus of Sha'alvim.
"Our graduates go out into society and
spread Torah where they go."

"Most of the
time we knew
what was coming,
because he held
his hands closer to
his head when he
threw a curveball;
but it didn't mat-
ter. Even though he was tipping off his
pitches, you still couldn t hit him."
Other celebrities who will play golf
or tennis at the event will include
baseball's Bobby Thompson, Darrell
Evans, Phil Garner, Dan Petry, Jim
Northrup, Rick Leach and George
Foster; and ex-football players Paul
Horning and Jerry -Kramer.
The Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation was founded in 1984 to
honor Jewish sports figures who have
distinguished themselves in the state of
Michigan. The event raises more than
$100,000 for the Oncology Fund.
Schaap said he is elated about
receiving the award. "Hank was my
hero growing up, and I got-to know
him later in life. As great as Hank
Greenberg was from a distance, I liked
him even better up close."
