He peri- odically exhibits his work at spaces in Detroit and Birmingham. "I was raised as a Conservative Jew, and going to Brandeis gave me the courage to be an artist,'? Bloom says. "I believe a liberal arts education, which I had there, is the best training for an artist because art is about ideas and views of the world. It incorporates poet- ry, art history, politics and spirituality." Bloom says she always is working. "I never know where I'll be when I get an idea," she says. "I stay open to the world and experiences that make my heart sing. I write down or make draw- ings of these experiences, and then I rely on them when I go into the studio. "Thousands of those experiences go into each work of art. Sometimes, I get 60 impressions in a day, and it's part of a vibrant sense of being alive." C Miriam Bloom's sculpture will be shown June 2-July 15 at the Grey Gallery, on the sixth floor of 1 John R, Detroit. There will be an opening reception 7-11 p.m. Saturday, June 2. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays and by appoint- ment Thursdays and Fridays. The Wright Kay Building, located at Woodward and John R, has become the home of the new Grey Gallery, which opens June 2 with a show featuring the sculpture of Miriam Bloom and the mixed-media works of Matthew Hanna. The owner is Doris Koosis, a sin- gle mom who has been work- ing as a business consultant. "I decided that I wanted to bring good quality art at affordable prices to Detroit," Koosis says. "I chose these two artists for the opening exhibit because I liked their work and I think they com- plement each other." While Bloom, a former Detroiter, does whimsical sculpture, Hanna, an area resident, offers a whimsical flair to an installation and a group of abstract paintings. "Grey Gallery will be very unconventional," says Koosis, a Pleasant Ridge resi- dent who has tried her hand at painting but has no plans to display her own projects. "I'm now working on the show that will open in July and feature artwork from Macedonia." Koosis, a cancer survivor who grew up in Plymouth and Bloomfield Hills, recently has brought Judaism into her life as a result of her illness. She has been counseled by Rabbi Joshua Bennett of Temple Israel and studies Kabbalah with a private teacher. The gallery owner, also a proud soccer mom, soon will have a special show for her son's kindergarten class. Aeneas and his friends will display their own work in a special event for children and their families. Dinner • BEEF BURGERS • SALADS • SANDWICHES • FISH • PASTA AND MORE!
