Olmert, speaking from New York
City, said he felt "any attempt to reach
a comprehensive agreement with the
PLO is impossible.
"Weakness has been projected by the
Israeli people," Olmert said. "The
Palestinians perceived that we're :.-ill-
ing to sacrifice so much."
The mayor was relieved that Arafat
rejected former Prime Minister Ehud
Barak's offer to divide the sovereignty
of Jerusalem because, he said, such
division would never have been
approved by Israel's population.
Conceding Jerusalem would be a .
"betrayal to the most fundamental
principle that's kept us together as a
people," he said, adding that the
immediate task is to manage the crisis
and reduce the violence.
The problem, from Rosenblum's
perspective, is that Israelis have lost
their sense of self as Jews and have lost
their sense of land.
"They don't know what they're
fighting for," he said. "Israel has the
(military) capability, but no morale;
the Palestinians have low capability,
but high morale."
Noting that Jerusalem is not n :n-
tioned in any of the Islamic holy
books, Rosenblum views Arafat's true
goal as "the abasement of the Jewish
people."
"Arafat sought to sever the funda-
mental connection of Jews- to their
land," he said. "That is why the issue
of Jerusalem is so crucial."
Rabbi Gottlieb, speaking from
Philadelphia, emphasized the religious
connection to Israel. He explained that
the goal of the Torah is for Jews to
keep the mitzvot in the Land of Israel.
Our continuity in the ga/ut (diaspora),
he said, is only a preparation for our
return to the land divinely promised
to our people 3,800 years ago.
He noted that Jewish history shows
that Jews must be responsible for their
own security. He felt that Jews living in
Israel must be allowed to make their
own decisions regarding the conflict —
"with military means, if necessary ."
"Our job now," Rabbi Gottlieb said,
"is to pray for secuciry and ultimate
shalom (peace)."
