& The National. Museum of the Civil
War Soldier. Open just two years, the
state-of-the-art museum is located on
the site of the pivotal battlefield where,
on April 2, 1865, Grant's Union forces
finally shattered Lee's Petersburg
defense lines, and paved the way for the
Confederate surrender at Appomattox
Court House one week later. •
The Pamplin facility, run by a pri-
vate foundation, combines high-tech-
nology, costumed interpreters and per-
sonal vignettes from the daily lives of
some of the three million Union and
Confederate soldiers to make the war
come alive.
Visitors also may stroll along the
nearly two-mile Breakthrough Trail
and explore some of the Civil War's
best-preserved earthworks and recon-
structed fortifications on land that was
owned by just two families and left

whizzing bullets and gunfire.
"It's so realistic it's almost frighten-
ing," says Gordon Lowes, a policeman
and history buff on. holiday from
Sussex, England, who learned of
Pamplin Park on the Internet.
For comic relief, we duck into the
children's activity tent where the kids
try on various soldiers' uniforms and
ham it up for photos. We discover in
another exhibit that soldiers, attempt-
ing to relieve the tedium of camp life,
sometimes bet on the outcome of a
race between two lice. And many sol-
diers from the Deep South were so fas-
cinated by snow that they staged huge
snowball fights; several men actually
lost an eye in snowball battles that
escalated into huge melees.
Pausing at a computer display, we
absorb a hard lesson in survival as we
pack a knapsack, picking and choosing
from among items a soldier could
comfortably carry.
