What's Wrong, Is Wrong

Someone once defined being positive as
"Being wrong at the top of your voice!"
Wh , is it so hard for people to admit that
they may be mistaken (euphemism for
wrong)? If it is true, as so many
espouse, that "Nobody's perfect,"
what is the big fear?
A typical example involved a
recent food order that I placed for
carryout at a local restaurant.
When I unpacked to order, which
had been verified piece by piece by
the cashier as the order was paid
SY MANELLO for, I discovered that two items
Editorial
were omitted. I called to complain.
Assistant
Me: "I just picked up an order and
two items were omitted."
Food person: "Was that cash or charge?"
M: "Charge, for $80."
FP:"I don't have any charges for that amount."
M: "I was just there 15 minutes ago."
FP: "I still don't have that charge. Oh, here it is."
M: "I am missing two items. How will you make
that up?
FP: "We gave you everything on your order."
M: "I am looking at the food right now and two
items are missing."
FP: "Oh, here they are on the counter. There was
another bag. Would you like to come back for them?"
M: "No, I can't take more time from work. Give
me credit."
FP: "I'll put a note in our box and you can pick up
two similar items anytime."
M: "Will you fax me a note to that effect or some-
thing to go on?"
FP: "No. It's right here in the box. That's the way
we do it."
Well, I had someone go that day and pick up the
items. I do not think that I'll be placing an order with
them again; that's the way I do it.
This customer may not always be right, but there
is an urgent need out there to have "complaints" han-
dled better. ❑
