important for developing style," says
Goode, married 14 years to violinist
Marcia Weinfeld, who will join him
for concerts next season.
The pianist, who acknowledges his
Jewish heritage but is not observant,
looks forward to the release of a new
recording featuring more Beethoven.
He has made more than two dozen
recordings of pieces by various com-
posers with a range from solo and
chamber works to lieder and concerti.
In 1993, Nonesuch released a 10-CD
set of his complete Beethoven sonata
cycle, the first by an American pianist.
ichard Goode will be sit-
ting at the piano for his
upcoming Michigan con-
cert, but he will be think-
ing dance. His program, sponsored by
the Chamber Music Society of
Detroit, features dance music by Bach,
Chopin and Beethoven.
Goode, appearing May 19 at the
Seligman Performing Arts Center on
the campus of Detroit Country Day
School, gave a lot of thought to his
selections and the way they comple-
ment each other.
"I've always loved the dance suites
of Bach, and I play them as much as
I can," says Goode, 57, who has per-
formed with the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra. "I had the idea of playing
two diverse ones and pairing them
with works by Chopin and
Beethoven.
"When I do a program, it's mostly
because I love the pieces, and I like
showing that Chopin was raised on
Bach and Mozart."
Goode, in his second performance
for the Chamber Music Society,
appeared in 1997 with soprano
Dawn Upshaw, a collaboration he
continues this season for other
engagements on a schedule that
takes him to San Francisco and
Cleveland as well as England and
Austria.
