"A Marilyn Blinder: "Ballerina" is one of a series of works inspired by visions garnered from the refraction of light passing through water. I vegetarian treat in West Bloomfield. I, Bob Talbert, March '99 I just had to find out what so many people were raving about." " Danny Raskin, June '99 "I now have an agent, Cheryl LaKritz," Schwartz says. "She's the one who spotted my work and pushed me into exhibiting. The images at the JCC gallery never have been seen pub- licly and represent a new technique and direction. They're sharper and show higher contrast." Sharp images have been at the heart of Lubin's painting, certainly soon after she earned a master's degree from the University of Michigan and was hired as an illustrator for a pharma- ceutical firm. She prepared advertise- ments to show medical conditions treated by company products, and those renderings were in publications circulated in many countries. "I've always enjoyed fine art and been interested in medicine," says Lubin, who works out of a second floor studio with lots of windows to draw in natural light as she combines colors. "When I'm painting, there is no time, no worries, only now. As a med- ical illustrator, I am drawn to subject matter concerning the natural world. Through the nuance of color, form and light, I capture life as I experience it. 33 Rue Devi lle, one of several paintings in this show, her first, presents a street in the south of France and captures two shadowy people on bicycles travel- ing toward light. Jeremy's in the Car introduces her husband and son walk- ing toward a lighthouse. With both works and in broader terms, the artist thinks of the depicted action as communicating choices people make as they move in certain directions. Lubin, who also does portraits, has completed large paintings and carbon drawings specifically for the current exhibit. While viewing an earlier dis- play in the JCC gallery, she talked about her own work and later provid- ed samples at the encouragement of friends. She subsequently was invited to be part of this group show. "I enjoy the process of painting as much as the results," Lubin says. "Painting, to me, is a form of medi- tation." ❑ "Collected Visions: A Group Exhibition" runs through July 3 at the Janice Charach Epstein Gallery at the West Bloomfield JCC.
