"My dad played in a band in college, and my grandparents sang profession- ally. Every family occasion we would all jam and sing these '60s songs." In the middle of his senior year in high school, with enough credits to graduate, Evan went to Israel. While traveling around the country, he wrote numerous songs, although he didn't perform. He also continued religious studies. "I went to a religious school [in Israel] and the rabbis were so incredi- ble and had the same kind of laid-back philosophy as me — they got me into keeping kosher [all the time] and pray- ing," says Evan. (While the twins grew up in a Conservative home and kept kosher in the house, their family did not observe the Sabbath.) About a year later twin brother Jaron joined Evan in Israel, developing the same love for music as well as for religion. But it wasn't until the broth- ers returned to Atlanta, and began per- forming in local clubs, that their career took off. "I was starting to write songs and I said to Jaron, 'Maybe it's something we should do together,"' says Evan. "I convinced him to do a couple of shows with me, and once he got on stage, he liked the way it felt." From clubs in Atlanta they started to get engagements all over the South, including Nashville, Tenn., and Birmingham, Ala. "We started playing open mikes and every show we played, they asked us back," he says. In 1994, Evan and Jaron released Live at KaLo's Coffeehouse and Not From Concentrate on their own label, which they called "A Major Label Records," since radio stations claimed they wouldn't play songs that weren't from "a major label." Before long, they were playing at Jimmy Buffett's club in the Florida Keys and caught the attention of Chris Blackwell, head of Island Records. Shortly after, they released We've Never Heard of You Either. But as soon as the album was completed, Blackwell left the record company and Island wound up dropping Evan and Jaron. "Our career began to take great twists and turns, but we really learned a lot from Island Records and don't hold any resentment," notes Evan. "The album came out in April 1998 but we were left without a label." Fortunately for the Lowenstein brothers, Columbia Records nabbed Alice Burdick Schweiger is a New York-based freelance writer. them — and it turned out to be a good decision for the high profile record company. The twins' music has created a stir in the industry and they have earned high praise. Seventeen magazine said Evan and Jaron "win you over with homegrown melodies and pop songs built on gen- uine emotion," and Interview maga- zine praised the pair's "telepathic har- monizing." Both brothers write melodies and lyrics, editing each other's catchy tunes. With the occasional help from an outside collaborator, including Mick Fleetwood, their music com- bines classics with pop. "As a teen-ager I listened to bands like the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Eagles and the Who," says Evan. "My parents always played Elvis Presley, and Simon and Garfunkel. My older brother had Ozzy Osbourne coming from his room, and my older sister had Billy Joel and Elton John coming from hers. So we grew with a whole combination of music that I think influenced our writing." From the very beginning, Evan and Jaron hoped for success, but never anticipated what would follow. "In the back of your mind, you hope you make it, but you never know what will happen," says Evan, who along with Jaron was just voted one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World by People magazine. "We sing and write music because we love it, but the fact that people dig it is more wonderful than I can say." What's next for the Lowenstein twins? Evan, who was married in November, wants to spend more time with his wife. Jaron, who is still sin- gle, has no special love interest he is talking about. "A lot of things are going our way," says Evan. "We are no longer a one- hit wonder, as our second song, "From My Head To My Heart," has hit the Top 40 charts. Now we are a two-hit wonder. So I guess we are in a pretty good position. "We love to tour and hope to make another record in the near future. What will happen from there, only time will tell." 1] Evan and Jaron perform, with spe- cial guests Angie Apara and Bliss 66, Thursday, May 24, at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit.
