The Congregation Shaarey Zedek
Sisterhood will mark its 21st annual
Sisterhood Shabbat 9 a.m. Saturday,
May 19, celebrating 96 years of serv-
ices to the synagogue.
Debbie Balkin, sisterhood presi-
dent, will address the congregation.
Torah readers include Judie
Blumeno, Karen Katz, Jackie Zeff,
Ronna Ross, Miriam Seagle, Betsy
Wolf and Marcia Boxman. Maftir
will be chanted by Marcia Boxman
and haftorah by Joanne Robinson.
Other participants in the service
include the following sisterhood offi-

Sisterhood's 45th annual donor lunch-
eon Wednesday, May 23, will feature a
presentation from Jeffrey Zaslow,
advice columnist with the Chicago Sun
Times.
In 2000,
Zaslow received
the Will Rogers
Humanitarian
Award, given to a
newspaper
columnist who
exemplifies the
ideals and public
service work of
Jeffrey Zaslow
the noted
humorist and
columnist. Through his column, he
raises money to assist children, singles
and senior citizens.
Prior to lunch, sisterhood will
honor Linda Poushter Lublin for her
service to the sisterhood, the syna-
gogue and the community. She has
served on the executive committee as
president from 1992-1994, member-
ship vice president, financial secretary
and donor ad book chair. Representing
Beth Shalom, she was the Women's
League for Conservative Judaism
Woman of Achievement honoree in
1989.
On Lublin's 50th birthday, the city
of Oak Park proclaimed April 5, 1997,
as Linda Lublin Day for her contribu-
tion to the community.

The Sholem Aleichem Institute
Moishe Haar Memorial Foundation
will sponsor the appearance of Bel
Kaufman 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at
the Birmingham Temple.
Kaufman, granddaughter of
Sholem Aleichem, will -peak on
"You May as Well Laugh: Memories
of My Grandfather."

The Jewish Parents Institute will
conduct the b'nai mitzvah of Jared
Adler, Adrienne Meltzer, Haley
Mitchell, Halley Roberts, Jake
Shearer and Ashley Statfield 10 a.m.
Saturday, May 19, at the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
Each student has completed a
philosophical study of the Torah and
Talmud, at least 32 hours of commu-
nity service and a paper dealing with
a Jewish topic of his or her choice.

Beth El Sisterhood
Elects Board
Jo-Ann MacWilliams-Wolf will be
installed for her second term as presi-
dent of the sisterhood of Temple Beth
El 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 23.
The sisterhood is marking its 100th
year of service headed by a president
who can trace her temple roots back to
the Cozens family who were founders
of the congregation. She is a graduate
of the religious school and became a
temple volunteer as a teen-ager when
she served as a vice president of the
Young Peoples Society and represented
YPS on the temple board.
Also to be installed are vice presi-

Nedelman, Denise Brown, Karen Hull
and Mitzi Saul Berger; treasurers, Janis

JFS Hosts
Child Psychiatrist
Dr. Larry B. Silver will be the speaker
for the Jewish Family Service annual
meeting 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at
Temple Shir Shalom.
Silver is a private-practice child and
adolescent psychiatrist in the
Washington, D.C., area. He is clinical
professor of psychiatry at Georgetown
University Medical Center and presi-
dent of the Learning Disabilities
Association of America.
