food counter.
A plaque now marks the memory of
Resi Moritz, who worked in the food
service field at various JCC locations for
40 years.
"She was the heart of the kitchen and
the heart of the Center," says Leslee
Magidson, managing director of the
Oak Park JCC. "She was a one-woman
show, basically the cook and bottle-
washer."
Magidson, along with Leslie Bash,
JCC associate executive director, and Eva
Haase, Moritz's daughter, planned an
April 22 dedication of the newly reno-
vated kitchen in remembrance of
Moritz, who died in 1997.
"She was the person who everyone
came to and loved," Magidson says.
"She listened to their stories and, besides
giving food, she could give advice."
Nearly 100 guests joined Moritz's
daughters, Haase and Judy Brackenridge
of Redford, and other family members
at a program and performance of
"Ezekiel Solomon: English Fur Trader"
by the Madame Cadillac Dance Theatre.
Magidson's memories of Moritz
include a warm feeling, a great deal of
respect — and split-pea soup.
"She was particularly known for her
split-pea soup," Magidson says. "You
could put a spoon in it and it would
stand up at a right angle to the soup."
The plaque includes a photo of
Moritz in the JCC kitchen before its
recent renovation. "It's such a great pic-
ture of her and so typical," Magidson
says. "She's standing at the counter
schmoozing."
Magidson remembers Moritz as
very dedicated to the JCC and to her
job. "She would leave work exhausted,
go home, rest and come back to get
things started for the next day. This is
where she wanted to be. Everyone
knew that."
