Ukraine Jews
To Make Aliyah

A small Jewish commu-
nity of 50 people recently discovered
in southwestern Ukraine by the Jewish
Agency for Israel is preparing to move
to Israel.
Residents of the village of
Konetspol, about 150 miles north of
Odessa, were discovered after several
Jews from the village approached a
Jewish Agency representative, express-
ing an interest in learning Hebrew and
moving to the Jewish state.

Canada's Jews
Welcome Credit

Toronto/JTA
Canadian Jewish offi-
cials welcomed Ontario's new tax cred-
it that, when fully implemented in
2005, will refund to parents up to half
of the first 57,000 in private school
tuition per child.
"This will hopefully go a long way
to making Jewish day school educa-
tion an available reality for so many,"
Toronto Rabbi Moshe Shulman said
of the tax credit.
The plan is similar to subsidies
already in effect in Quebec and
Canada's western provinces.

UJC Taps Tisch
For Top Post

New York/JTA — The United Jewish
Communities offered its top volunteer
position to the president of UJA-
Federation of Greater New York,
according to a member of the UJC
nominating committee.
The source said James Tisch of New
York was asked to replace fellow phi-
lanthropist Charles Bronfman as chair-
man of the board, but has not yet
responded.
Other UJC officials declined to con-
firm the nomination, saying they have
been "talking to a whole host of peo-
ple to see who's interested."
