The Next Generation

Here in Michigan, no border guards
stop young people from traveling
wherever they want.
But the AAJF Duane Kell Essay
Contest aims to break down the invisi-
ble barriers of fear and prejudice. In
all, 40 young people completed the
entrance requirements for the 2001
contest.
Assigned to multicultural groups of
two or three, they met at each other's
homes. visited each other's places of
worship, studied and wrote an essay
on The Ties That Bind.
This year's winners include: Sam
Stocker, Royal Oak Dondero High
School, and Idan Hannawa,
Southfield-Lathrup High School, first
place; and Amy Yousif, Madison
Heights Madison High School,
Alexandria Suchy-Mabrouk,
Plymouth-Canton High School, and
Sharee Pliskow, Berkley High School,
second place.
The AAJF presented the winners
with a total of nearly 57,000 in schol-
arships. Everyone on a specific team
received the same award.
Hannawa, whose parents were born
in Baghdad, said the experience ,ught
him that Muslim and Jewish cultures
are a lot closer than he'd previously
thought
"Both believe they are the sons of
Abraham," he said. "Both utilize the
Sabbath as a holy day to connect with
God."
"We had no discomfort because of
the situation in the Middle East," said
third-place winner Michael Hack of
Birmingham, a student at Roeper
School. "We discussed it, but then we
went on to other things."
Hack's partners were Thomas Konja
of Redford Township Catholic Central
High School and Bashar Toubia of
Hazel Park High School.
"I am amazed at how many parts of
the community are represented in this
organization," said Hack's mother,
Anita Hack. "It would be a wonderful
thing for temples and synagogues to
be involved in. Our families and -aiths
are so similar."
