"I like trying new things so the work
evolves every year, Finesilver says.
Wood turner Mitch Wolok, repre-
sented by the Arianna Gallery in Royal
Oak, will show more carving and dec-
oration in his return visit. Using rose-
wood, he has designed some bowls to
suggest an opening poppy and others
that are longer and narrower than in
years past.
"This process is the opposite of clay
processes," explain, Wolok, who lived
in Michigan before moving to Florida.
"With clay, the artist adds. With
wood, the artist takes away and gets
only one shot. I use salvaged logs that
have been cut down by storms or peo-
ple."
Marcy Feldman, a Southfield jewel-
ry artist who sells her Heartwear
Designs line to stores around the
country, brings Judaica to
Birmingham as part of her display.
"I will have thick, geometric stars
and chai forms," says the self-taught
designer, whose company has operated
for almost 20 years. "I'll also be show-
ing heart and birth stone pendants for
Mother's Day."
Richard Rothbard, who terms his art
forms "boxology," showcases some
new themes among his designs, which
include Jewish symbols and refer e nces
to Jewish history.
"The work that I do now is much
more complex," says Rothbard, who
operates An American Craftsman
stores in New York and Massachusetts
to offer his own projects and the proj-
ects of other artists.
"Rather than just making interesting
boxes, I've turned the interiors of the
boxes into different themes with
scenes and stories. I've also created a
collection of miniature theme boxes."
Star of David boxes, just like other
boxes in his line, can be customized so
that the interior is a diorama that cap-
tures a person's interests or marks an
important event.
For example, one was made as a
keepsake at the birth of twins. It
included the babies' names, date of
birth, a little Noah's ark and a meno-
rah.
"I have some new music boxes," says
Rothbard, who also has expressed dif-
ferent takes on Noah's Ark — one
with musical instruments and another
with a garden. ❑
