Prayerbook Study

Congregation Beth Shalom's third-grade
student will have a prayerbook party at 9
a.m. Sunday, May 13, at the synagogue.
Parents and families will participate in
the party, which will include a siyum (a
concluding celebration for a course of
study) for the third-graders as they com-
plete their Hebrew reading and writing
studies. The students will begin the study
of the prayerbook.
In honor of the occasion, the
Religious School Parents group will pre-
sent each child with his or her own
prayerbook. Parents will be asked to
design and create a personal prayerbook
cover for their child.
Refreshments will be provided by the
Religious School Parents, sponsors of the
event.

Names Graduates

Temple Shir Shalom will honor gradu-
ating seniors at Shabbat services 8 p.m.
Friday, June 1.

Graduation Nears

The Natalie and Manny Charach
Religious School of Congregation
Beth Ahm will conduct graduation
exercises 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May
17, at the synagogue.
Class members are Allison Kessler,
Lindsay Kwaselow, Laura Langberg,
Mark Lefkowicz, Adam Shapin, Erik
Wodowski.
Following graduation, a reception
will be held to honor the graduates.

Shul Focus
Is Kabbalah

The Shul, a local branch of the world-
wide Chabad-Lubavitch movement, will
host Rabbi DovBer Pinson on Friday
and Saturday; May 18-19.
Rabbi Pinson, author, scholar and
lecturer from Brooklyn, will speak on
Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism at the
Shul, 6211 Quaker Hill Drive, West
Bloomfield.
Rabbi Pinson will speak twice on
May 18, 7 and 8 p.m. On May 19, he
will speak at sezidah shlishit. A light din-
ner will start the evening of discussion
and chasidic stories; it will be followed
by Havdalah services at 9:40 p.m.
For families with children, there will
be a separate children's program
throughout the evening.
Attendance cost is 515 for adult; S25
for a couple; S36 for a family including
dinner for Friday. There is no charge for
the May 19 event.

Beth Shalom
Promotes Healing

Congregation Beth Shalom will begin
its observance of Shavuot with a heal-
ing service 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 27,
at the synaogue.
The service will be followed at 8
p.m. by a panel discussion featuring
guests from the community and con-
gregation on "Spirituality and Care
Giving — Giving From Your Heart:
Different Givers, Different Gifts."
Evening services will take place at 9
p.m. with a dessert reception at 9:30
p.m. There is a charge of 57.50 per
family payable by Wednesday, May
23. Babysitting is available by advance
reservation.

Beth El Library
Hosts Open House

The Temple Beth El Meyer Prentis
Memorial Library will host a series of
mini-exhibits 10 a.m.-noon Sundays
May 13 and 20.
Prospective students may attend class-
es; their parents and the community are
invited to explore the library, including
the Marilyn Daniels Special Needs
Collection, housing texts on the educa-
tional and spiritual needs of adolescents.

Shaarey Zedek
Honors Kasle

The Jewish Theological Seminary
of America and Congregation
Shaarey Zedek will honor Evelyn
Kasle at a gala on Thursday, June 7,
at the synagogue. JTS Chancellor
Ismar Schorsch will be the speaker.
A member of the congregation
since 1965, Kasle serves on the
Shaarey Zedek Board of Trustees as
well as the Detroit JTS board. She
promotes and supports the arts and
Jewish cultural heritage and serves
as chair of the Shaarey Zedek
Cultural
Committee. In
1999, Kasle co-
chaired the
Detroit
Institute of
Arts exhibition
"Treasures of
Jewish Cultural
Heritage" from
the library of
the Jewish
Theological
Evelyn Kasle
Seminary. Last
year, she
attended the
weeklong Wagner Institute for
Jewish Studies at JTS.
Kasle is a founding member of
the Cohn-Haddow Center for
Jewish Studies, where she worked
with former Wayne State University
President David Adamany and
wrote the initial feasibility study
leading to the creation of the center.
She served on the board of the
Jewish Home and Aging Services
and of the Detroit chapter of the
American Jewish Committee.
Recently, Kasle established a
scholarship at JTS for the Rabbinic
Clinical Pastoral Education pro- -
gram. Funding will provide intern-
ships in hospital or hospice settings

Honors Kaufnians

Adat Shalom Synagogue will honor
Flora and Herbert W Kaufman as
Jewish Theological Seminary Shin
Award recipients on Saturday, May 12,
during Shabbat services. The award pre-
sentation will be at a community vide
dinner Thursday, June 7, at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Herbert Kaufman is chair of the
H.W. Kaufman Financial Group Inc.
and president of Burns and Wilcox Ltd.
He serves on

Interest in early childhood education
led the Kaufman family to endow the
Adat Shalom nursery school. This year
Mr. Kaufman created the Herbert W.
and Flora Kaufman Scholarship Fund at
the William Davidson Graduate School
of Jewish Education at the Jewish
Theological Seminary. Priority will be
given to a student entering into early
elementary education.
The Kaufmans recently endowed the
H.W. and Flora Kaufman Library at
Walsh College, Novi campus.
Flora Kaufman was a founding
member of Temple Emanu-El in Oak
Park and was involved with Meals on
Wheels. She is a 10-year women's golf
champion at Tam O'Shanter Country
Club in West Bloomfield and a 45-year
member of the Women's District Golf
Association of Michigan. She is a life
master at duplicate bridge.
