How Can We
Help?
c ome at the May 2 meeting are
tinvolved in fund-raising,
tutoring and mentoring students,
both in Detroit and in other pub-
lic school districts.
Phyllis Jarvis is project coordi-
nator for the Detroit Coalition
for Literacy, which coordinates
volunteer tutors for children in
kindergarten through third grade.
She quoted figures from the
National Assessment of
Educational Programs (NAEP)
showing that, nationwide, 40 per-
cent of third-graders read below
grade level. Forty million adults in
the United States read and write at
or below the fifth-grade level, while
21 million cannot read at all.
The NAEP estimates that illit-
eracy costs the United States $225
billion a year in lost productivity.
The organization has mobilized
325 literacy volunteers from 25
member organizations, Jarvis said.
They serve in Detroit and in 10
other public school districts.
In addition to tutoring, the
Detroit Public Schools need a
transfusion of money, Dr. Burnley,
said. The Pasteur Elementary
Alumni Association has taken this
challenge to heart.
Led by Marcy i'elciman of
Huntington Woods, the associa-
tion has more than 200 paid
members. Each year, they read to
students, speak at career day and
give each graduate a dictionary.
The group also has begun an
endowment fund to send Pasteur
Elementary students to college.
"Personally, I feel it's our
responsibility," Feldman said.
"The Jewish community really
abandoned Detroit after [the riots
in] 1967. And the Detroit Public
Schools gave us so much."
The Pasteur Elementary
Alumni Association, together with
the Detroit Coalition for Literacy
and the YES Foundation, forms
the Children's Literacy
Collaborative.
The next fund-raiser for the
Pasteur alumni is a Sept. 8 sock
hop. The event v. ill take place at
the school, and Dr. Burnley has
promised to be there.
