He's hospitalized for a week or more every three months. He's on the list for a double lung transplant. "He's just too sick for me to sit back and do nothing," said Kay. So when she saw an announcement for the Great Strides Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis in West Bloomfield on May 6, she knew she had to get involved. The result was Team Mart, nearly 90 of Mares family members, friends and their friends who joined together for the 10-kilometer walk through Drake Sports Park. The group gathered pledges of more than 513,000 for LL.-. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which coordinates the national Great Strides effort. A Family Affair "Ninery-one cents of every dollar goes to research and education," said Kay of Farmington Hills, who walked with her husband, Jeff, and daughters Nicole, 3, and Ashley, 1. Mares father, Dr. Richard Colman of Bloomfield Township, and stepfather, Joel Levi of West Bloomfield, were there, as were his stepsister Rebecca Goldberg and stepbrother David Levi, both from West Bloomfield. Supporters included 20 students from Rebecca Goldberg's seventh grade science class at Covington Middle School in Birmingham and Dawn Lamberton of West Bloomfield, who didn't know Matt or anyone who knew him. She saw a poster Kay had hung in the Kroger store at 14 Mile and Farmington, and signed up just because she wanted to help. Others couldn't walk May 6, but made contributions anyway. One of Goldberg's students gave her 5250 that he got as bar mitzvah gifts. Matt's mother, Lynn Levi, was absent. She is with her son in Los Angeles, where he's been hospitalized for more than two weeks. But she found a Great Strides event happening the same day in Los Angeles and walked there. The family talked to her by cell phone throughout the after- noon, starring at 1 p.m. as the West Bloomfield walk was ending and the Los Angeles walk was beginning. Other Victims Several other Jewish families partici- pated in the walk, inclurling Cherie and Danny Engelman of West Bloomfield, whose daughter, Avery Monet, 2, has CF, and Lori and Dr. DETROIT JEWISH NEWS To order your subscription or a gift subscription for family or friends, please call (248) 354.6620. Dr. Jeff DeVries of West Bloomfield walked in support of Ari Roth and in memory of his wife, Sheri, who had CF and died after a double lung trans- plant in December. As recently as 10 years ago, few peo- ple with CF lived beyond their teens. Now, thanks to advances in medical research and education, many CF suf- ferers live into their 30s and have fuller and more comfortable lives. Kay is hoping a cure will be found in time to help Matt. "He's a fighter," she said. "He's funny, sensitive, bright and makes everyone happy. He's the person I most admire because he has such a drive to go on." Speaking from his hospital bed in Los Angeles, Matt said he was impressed with his sister's effort. "I never wanted to be a poster child for anything, but this is a good cause," he said, adding that Team Matt makes him feel closer to those back home. "I never would have asked anyone to do this, but the fact that they are all out there to raise money for cystic fibrosis is really admirable," he said.
