on't assume that everyone who works at an
agency or synagogue in our Jewish community
is Jewish. Non-Jewish workers, from executive
directors to educators to building managers, help make
our local institutions strong.
And, along the way, some even have become defenders
of our faith when confronted by those who hold stereo-
typic or anti-Semitic views. Some players in this week's
cover story by Huntington Woods writer Jill Davidson
Sklar are pictured on our cover. Going clockwise, from
top left, are: Robert Riley, building manager,
Congregation B'nai Moshe; Heidi Christein, archivist,
Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives, Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit; Nancy Kister,
finance director, Jewish Home and Aging Services; Hazel
Shackelford, administrative assistant, Alliance for Jewish
Education; and Lorna Carlone, Federation graphics spe-
cialist.
