Essay Contest
Winners Named

CHAIM(Children of Holocaust-sur-
vivors Association In Michigan) has
announced the winners of its 17th
annual Holocaust Essay
Competition.
Students from all parochial and
public schools in Oakland and
Washtenaw counties and 500 other
schools were asked to address the
topic: "What made it possible for the
Holocaust to occur, and why is the
study of the Holocaust relevant to
students today?"
First place and $100 was awarded
to Ethan Weinstock of Williamston
High School for his essay, "60 Short
Years." Weinstock, of Lansing, read
his winning essay for during the
statewide Yom HaShoah commemo-
ration ceremony in Lansing on April
25.
Second place and $50 was award-
ed to Rachel McGuire of
Williamston High School and third
place and $25 to Melissa Mawilai of
Femdale High School.
Honorable mentions went to Brett
J. Wittner and Amanda Folk, of
West Bloomfield High School, Joe
Mead and Rachel Lovis, of
Williamston High School, and
Kathleen Willard, of Greenville High
School.
All other participants were award-
ed an engraved certificate.
Debra Feldman of West
Bloomfield chaired the contest.
Judges were Eva Hamburger of West
Bloomfield, Morry Levin of
Farmington Hills, Allene Koby of
Oak Park and Helen Cozzetto of
West Bloomfield. Assisting were
Adam Silver of Huntington Woods,
Dana Ishbia of Farmington Hills and
Jack Weisman of West Bloomfield.

Poppy Days

The Michigan Jewish War Veterans
and Ladies Auxiliary will join other
Michigan veteran organizations dur-
ing May for their annual poppy sales.
The poppy tradition began after
World War I, symbolic of the flowers
growing over the American service-
men's graves in Belgium's Flanders
Fields.
Proceeds from the sales are used to
service Michigan's hospitalized veter-
ans and provide college scholarships
for descendants.
