AJC Campaign Promotes Israel

In honor of Israel Independence
Day, the American Jewish
Committee/Metropolitan Detroit
Chapter will kick off an ad cam-
paign featuring prominent local
personalities' viewpoints on what
Israel means to them.
Campaign participants include
Bernard "Bernie" Moray, CEO,
Gorman's; Andrea Fischer
Newman, senior vice president,
Northwest Airlines; Dr. Andrew
Sloan, chief of neuro-oncology,
Karmanos Cancer Institute;
Eugene Driker, partner, Barris,
Scott, Denn & Driker; State Rep.
Gilda Z. Jacobs, Democratic floor
leader; and Debra B. Darvick,
writer.
Additional individuals have been
approached to write short essays on
the topic for a pamphlet that will
be distributed at community-wide

events, including JerusaleMania on
Sunday, May 20, at the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
The chapter modeled the six-
week series after a similar national
ad campaign on Jewish identity.
"Israel is the issue on the front-
burner for many Jews in our com-
munity," said Todd Mendel, AJC
project chair. "Others in the Jewish
world are seeking help in coming
to terms with their allegiance to
America and their interest and love
for Israel. We hope by offering this
wonderful array of opinions, Jews
in our community will feel more
comfortable about supporting
Israel during these difficult times."
For information about AJC
activities, call the Michigan office
in Bloomfield Township: (248)
