Camp Helps Cope
With Cancer

Washington — Admitted spy Jonathan
Jay Pollard should be freed from feder-
al prison now on humanitarian
grounds, B'nai B'rith International
President Richard D. Heideman and
Exective Vice President Daniel S.
Mariaschin said in a letter sent to pres-
ident George W. Bush.
"Mr. Pollard served 16 and a half
years of a life sentence for one charge of
conveying classified information to a
friendly nation. The average time served
for those convicted or who plead guilty
to this crime is two to four years,"
Heideman and Mariaschin write.
"Mr. Pollard, whose health is poor,
has expressed remorse. Yet the United
States continues to imprison him —
on the basis of secret information to
which his lawyers are not allowed full
access but that serves as the founda-
tion for repeated, leaked allegations"
against the former civilian Navy ana-
lyst, Heideman and Mariaschin say.
The B'nai B'rith leaders add that the
organization made the same request of
former president Bill Clinton several
times. "We argued that, in this case, the
point at which justice becomes vindic-
tiveness has long since passed. A compre-
hensive review of the case was promised
— but no results were made public."

Oxford Pressed
On Shoah Denier

London/JTA — Britain's Union of
Jewish Students is pressing the Oxford
Union to cancel a planned address by
Holocaust denier David Irving at its
debating society on May 10.
Plans call for Irving, who lost a high-
profile libel lawsuit against Holocaust
scholar Deborah Lipstadt last year, to
be part of a panel debating freedom of
speech at Oxford. A previous invitation
to Irving was withdrawn last year after
protests by Jews and anti-racist groups.

U.S. Denounces
Ayatollah's Denial

Washington/JTA — The United States
condemned Holocaust-denial state-
ments made by Iran's spiritual leader.
After Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told a
conference last week in Tehran that
Jews exaggerated the extent of the
Holocaust to gain international sym-
pathy, State Department spokesman
Philip Reeker called the comments
"outrageous and deplorable."
Such statements "do nothing to allay
our concerns about Iran and its sup-
port for terrorism and opposition to
Middle East peace," Reeker said.
