woman in the study tells how she hosts
Easter dinner for her husband's family,
even cooking ham for the occasion.
In attempting to balance the Jewish
upbringing with the influences of
Christian relatives, one family ended
up insulting their Jewish-raised child,
as the grown child reports in the
study: "Now we would go there for
Christmas, and my cousins would all
be getting toys from Santa and I'd be
etting gifts from the dog because my
om felt bad. From the dog, from
ur dog, because she believed I could-
't get gifts from Santa. Like that's
'ust outrageous."
The study also found many non-
ewish parents eventually grew to
esent their children's Jewish upbring-
ng, though they initially agreed to
he concept. The resentment stemmed
rom a feeling of exclusion — pa>.ticu-
lady when the child learned unfamil-
ar rituals and language — as well as a
eneral discomfort with organized
eligion.
Many non-Jews married to Jews
so expressed discomfort with what
hey saw as the Jewish community's
xclusivity and the idea of Jews being
"chosen people."
In addition to reporting on the fam-
ly dynamics of the intermarried, the
tudy also looks at the influence of
arents on whether their children
ntermarry. It reports 62 percent of the
ntermarried Jews said their parents
ad made no comments discouraging
em from marrying outside the faith.
Roughly the same percentage of
fews married to Jews — or to gentiles
yvho had converted — said their par-
nits had discouraged them from inter-
marrying.
In addition, intermarried Jews who
lad grown up with several years of
fewish education, cf.iebrating many
iewish holidays and having some
Shabbat observance were more likely to
Laise their children exclusively as Jews.
Some of the other findings:
• Approximately three-fourths of
newish women married to non-Jews say
:hey are exclusively raising their chil-
iren as Jews, compared to slightly less
han half of intermarried Jewish men.
• While the majority of interfaith
`amilies, except those raising their
:hildren as Christian, celebrated
iThanukah and Passover, other holi-
lays were observed less frequently.
• Interfaith couples discussed the
eligion of the household and poten-
ial children when the relationship got
serious," rather than waiting until
hey had married. O
