Volunteers stepped up to staff 61
fferent sires in Detroit. New D. troit
c., a non-profit organization, pro-
ed two sandwiches and a boxed
nch bought from McDonald's and
rmer Jack's.
"On one Saturday morning, we
unted 73 kids living in the
ichigan Central Depot building, not
ing to school, their mothers on
ugs," he said. "We had been feeding
em for about four weeks, and I got
know a mother — a heroin addict
th three kids. I told her these kids
e going to grow up the same way she
I asked her if she had any family to
e care of them.
"She said she had a great-aunt who
uldn't afford to take care of them.
we worked out a deal where her
ree kids went to her great-aunt's
use," he said. Shapiro's "deal" meant
ur engineering outfits chipped in
,000 to start and gave her great-
nt $250 a week.
"We got her into drug rehab last
arch," he said. "\\ie got her a job and
apartment when she got out. She's
sting a little bit of a welfare supple-
ent but she's earning enough money
keep her kids. We ran into a lot of
:ople who have the same problems."
Shapiro said squatters living in the
epot building sleep on all their
longings and tie their shoelaces in
ruble knots so nothing gets ripped off.
He is trying to change the situation.
He is starting a program with two
council members, a couple of coun-
commissioners, some social workers
id judges for a federally funded drug
d alcohol rehabilitation program.
He plans to meet with Detroit pas-
rs to get them to offer shower facili-
ts
, and laundry facilities for the home-
ss, and with other activists he's setting
D a shelter for battered women.
"Our aim isn't just to feed then-, but
get them off the streets, and back
.to a productive life," he said.
,What discourages him is that Jews
id African-Americans are so far apart.
,
"We'd be a lot better off if Jews were
more involved in helping bring the
two cultures together," said Shapiro,
who serves on the NAACP board.
"We're both on the same track."

Accolades
Robert Dickman, the Salvation Army's
William Booth Legal Aid Clinic direc-
tor, is thrilled that his friend of 12
years is getting the award.
"Nate has always been an inspiration
to me," said Dickman, who met
Shapiro at Temple Israel. "Every time I
think of social action, I think of Nate."
Dickman was trying to start a shelter in
Detroit for women on Aid to Dependent
Children 10 years ago. Shapiro was
always introducing him to people with
clout at breakfast meetings. "He is some-
one who shows us all how to reach out
and give back to the community."
Rabbi Harold Loss of Temple Israel,
called Shapiro a warm, heimish guy
"He is totally committed to creating
an environment where people can be
successful, whether it's feeding the
homeless and the hungry, providing
scholarships, providing opportunities
within his office. His goal is to truly
give people an opportunity to improve
their lives."
Rev. Wendell Anthony, president of
the Detroit NAACP, said Shapiro has
demonstrated over the years his
unique and total commitment "with-
out expecting anything in return.
"I've known him for so many years,"
he said. "And in each instance, it has
always been Nate giving more than he
received."
