Although Karen's mother initially
vows that her daughter will run no
more, in the end Karen heals and is
off to train for a place with the big
competition in Spain. As Karen runs,
far ahead of all the competition, she
thinks of her father and how proud
he would be. Beside her runs her
friend, Yasmine, and the two are
eventually selected to go ro Spain.
Let's be honest: this is not the easi-
est subject in the world to write
about. Especially as Israel is
immersed these days in hostilities,
how do you speak honestly to chil-
dren about who is an enemy and
who is not, and how to respect the
individual who has established him-
self as your friend even though his
people and yours are at war.
For the most part, this book suc-
ceeds. There are no impossible-to-
believe characters (Abdullah, for
example, does not suddenly turn
around and become the best friend
the Jews ever had) and there are no
sickeningly sweet resolutions at the
end (Karen does not remark, "Wow!
Yasmine and I must work together to
bring world peace!").
Instead, the girls are simply part of a
team off to a racing event.
Running on Eggs is not for every-
one. It's not an especially brilliant
text, and its political message is clear,
as evinced on the back of the book
(discussing the switching of the
lunch boxes, it states: "People would
start wondering who's right and
who's wrong. Or if there ever was a
right or wrong.") But for those look-
ing for a book that reasonably intro-
duces children to the complexities of
life in Israel (where the author has
lived for many years), it's a decent
start.

Unfortunately, all the characters in
this book seem to be suffering from a
rather dreadful cold. Or maybe
they've just ended a lengthy stint as
clowns with the circus and can't get
all their stage makeup off.
What else could explain the fact
that they all have cute-as-a-button
noses that are decidedly red?
And speaking of the word cute,
that is the essence of A Mountain of
Blintzes, published just in time for
Shavuot.
