Sruli's company — fill me to the brim.
And keep me awake for a long time.
Oh, Goch am I entitled to such happi-
ness?
Despite its painful subject matter,
this is a gentle book, never bitter, but
always, like its title says, full of hope.
We often speak of the number —
the 6 million — murdered in the
Holocaust, and of
the anguish that fol-
lowed those who
survived. There is
little more painful,
yet unforgettable,
than considering the
life of just one of
those forever affect-
ed by the Nazi hor-
rors.

This book, written
for young readers
between the ages
of 9 and 14, is the
story of two girls
in Israel: Karen,
who is Jewish, and
Yasmine, who is
Arab. The two
meet when they
both drop their
lunch boxes, acci-
dentally taking the
other's.
A family friend
discovers Karen's
. mistake, and he's not pleased. In
fact, he burns the lunch box.
Yasmine's family is equally disgust-
ed when they see that the lunch
box of a Jewish girl has found its
way into their home. Yasmine's
brother, Abdullah, even becomes
suspicious; why would Yasmine do
such a thing? Was it really an acci-
dent that she took a Jewish girl's
lunch box?
Meanwhile, Karen is hoping to
secure a place on her school's track
team because the top seven run-
ners will be allowed to participate
in an international race in Spain.
During practice, Karen takes a
walk down a quiet path and con-
siders her life. She had become a
runner because her father had
wanted it, and the two had spent
many happy hours running

also enjoys running and often
trains in this very field. Yasmine
had once been on the track team,
but her coach had asked her to
leave; Yasmine, who comes from
an observant Muslim family, will
not wear pants, which the coach
insists are necessary for any track
team member.
Karen and Yasmine decide to
train together, and they become
friends.
Then Abdullah discovers the
two talking together. Soon after-
ward, a group of Arab boys begin
chasing Karen, and she fears for
her life. She falls; her lips covered
with blood, her hip aching with
sharp pain, she drags herself
home.
