he memory of the Orchard's Children's Services energetic
president/CEO Jerry Levin was the focus of 220 people at a celebra-
tion April 28 in Detroit.
Two years to the day after Levin died, the inaugural Champions for
c hildren dinner was held at the Atheneum Suite Hotel in Greektown to honor
e Southfield-based Orchard's longtime leader.
The Gerald L. Levin Champion for Children Award was presented to Jack
esnak, a Detroit Free Press writer since 1973, whose investigative reports have
raven attention to the condition of children in the juvenile justice system. The
onor, initiated last year, is given to individuals dedicated to keeping alive
evin's altruistic spirit and concern for children.
Loretta Polish, chair of Orchard's board, and Deborah Dinco, Levin's succes-
r, praised Levin and Kresnak in after-dinner remarks. Dinco credited Kresnak
ith providing balanced reporting of the complex child welfare system — with-
t sensationalism.
"I call myself a juvenile justice reporter," said Kresnak, who is part of his paper's
hildren First" emphasis. "I find the issues very compelling.
"I've met many heroes and champions for children among
horn, high on the list, was Jerry Levin. I think that his work
ith children was very innovative and important and I am
ry honored to get an award in his name."
Levin's widow and dinner co-chair, Randie Levin, along
ith co-chairs Barbara and Fred Goldberg of Franklin, recipi-
ts of the first Champion for Children citation last year, pre-
nted the award to Kresnak.
Orchards Children's Services was founded in 1962 by the
Gerald L. Levin
ational Council of Jewish
omen to provide residential
re for troubled boys. Levin's
adership rescued the organiza-
n from -financial crisis, and in
