Psychic Connections Local psychics and mediums say they use their abilities for the guidance and comfort of others. JILL DAVIDSON SKLAR Special to the Jewish News rances Moss was simply looking for a deck of playing cards when she stumbled upon the mystical world. In a shop in England, she accidentally bought a deck of tarot cards instead. "There was a big sheet of paper with little pictures of the cards on it. I just started messing about with it," she said. "I knew it was wrong, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that this was something to help people find direction in their lives." No Moss, a Reform Jew, sees a broad range of clients -who seek her expertise in palm- istry; tarot card readings, graphology (the study of hand- writing), photograph reading, past lives and numerology. And she is not alone. A hand- ful of other psychics and medi- ums who are Jewish also ply their otherworldly trades between Detroit and Ann Arbor, in spite of the fact that some sources in the Torah and Jewish literature point to the professions as sinful. "I have a natural ability to help people. What I do is more about guidance and redirecting your life, about what you are here for and what you are supposed to be doing with it. It encourages people to take what they have, work with it and do the best they can do," said Moss, dismissing the notion of evil or sin associated with what she does one-on-one with individ- uals or at parties. "It is helpful." Others also dismiss the suggestion that they are in the business for any- thing but to offer guidance with their unique gifts. Nanci Rose Gerler prac- tices energy healing with crystals; spirit channeling of spirit guides, angels and souls of departed loved ones; and pho- tograph reading. Gerler, a non-practicing Jew who is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, says the information she receives from chan- neling is intended for personal and spiri- tual growth, not for evil. "The unfortunate thing about religion is that they make this a part of the Devil or Satan, and it is not," said Gerler. "I work within the angelic realm." Char Margolis, a nationally famous medium based in Michigan and California whose parents were among the early pioneers of Temple Israel, says that the information she receives comes from the spirits, and may be "colored" by the personalities of the souls. The informa- tion is not intended to be a set of instructions as we all still have free will. This natural intuition makes the ability she possess- es seemingly less magical and more like a common conduit. "I'm kind of like the phone line connecting people to their loved ones, spirit guides and the universal source of -wisdom," writes Margolis. "The information is not coming from me, it's coming through me." David Techner, funeral director at Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield, whose friendship with Char goes back to the fourth grade, said he and his wife, Ilene, became believers only when Char offered to do a reading for Ilene. There was no way Char could have known about the things she revealed to his wife, Techner said. `Because of what I do, I have spoken to many people who have sought psy- chic phenomena and have revealed sim- ilar experiences to that of my wife's and mine," he said.
