"I battled sleepwalking and what I called the 'night prowler,' waking up and eating in the middle of the night. This went on for about two years." During that period, Perelman's par- ents were divorced after 30 years of marriage, compounding her depres- sion and feelings of helplessness. "I felt like a prisoner, unable to sleep through a night, a victim of the pain I was facing. But, looking back, this `night prowler' was a blessing in dis- guise because it forced me to `wake up' to my gift." The gift she refers to is her surren- der to a higher power. She feels that God was trying to get her attention and she wasn't listening until she tapped into her deceased grandmoth- er ' s energy. "I started journaling when I was on the edge, and my grandmother came through in my writings. I really feel it was not my hand doing the writing. She spoke to me about her depression and her suicide. She told me how she killed herself and she told me to sur- render. "She said if I worked with her, she would bring me my soul mate. Her words were 'Ryan, red rose and 9/24. — Eight months later, through a bizarre series of circumstances (or synchronici- ty, according to Perelman), Rebecca met Brian Rosen, born on Sept. 24. "I 1.vas healed," she says. Perelman and Rosen will be married on June 10. Both are originally from Omaha, Neb. healinab 3 it continues with her dedica- tion to healing others. Though her degree was in advertising, she aban- doned plans to pursue a job in the field, and instead enrolled in a holistic healing school called Serenity School of Holistic Health in Farmington Hills, the only state certified school of its kind in Michigan. She will receive certification in August as a holistic health practitioner, licensing her in such practices as hypnotherapy, aromatherapy and energy reiki, a Chinese hands-on healing process. In addition, she became a certified angel therapy practitioner through a course offered by Doreen Virtue, Ph.D., whose book Divine Guidance (Renaissance Books; $14.95) teaches ways to open the lines of communica- tion with God, the angels and spiritual guides. Perelman's arrival at a coffeehouse in West Bloomfield, from an internship at the Jewish Federation of Omaha (where her mom is director), came through her dad. He moved here to open a mortgage business, convinced Brian to join him, and directed Rebecca to the coffee shop after meet- ing the owner. Both her parents underscore the "ordinariness" of Perelman's childhood. "She has a wisdom and understanding beyond her years," says Jan. "But she maintained an interesting balance of seriousness and life enjoyment. She had an active social life and seemed to be the center of the family. She intu- itively brought everyone together. "You know, she's even more beauti- ful on the inside," adds Jan. "A joy." SPIRITUAL MESSENGER on page 81
