Free HOME MADE APPLE STRUDEL & attend Manhattan Hebrew High School, where Rabbi Shlomo Riskin vas the dean. He lived in the home of the principal, Pinky Bak, a "great, beautiful man" he describes as his mentor and spiritual father. When Bak died suddenly at age 32, Gafni was asked to speak at a memori- al, representing students. He recalls that he was granted then the gift of speech. "My words felt like wings; they soared through me effortlessly, lifting and falling, carrying the crowd. "Before a packed auditorium, I promised to pick up the baton that Pinky had dropped — to become a teacher of wisdom in the world." Before the principal's death, Gafni didn't know that would be his path. Now, he identifies that moment as a. soul print call. He has written several books in Hebrew of a more scholarly nature on themes of uncertainty as a spiritual value, personal myth essays and a Lurianic kab- balistic view of women. They will be issued in English later this year. Those volumes form part of the library of the School of Personal Myth, which will also include studies of biblical stories about tears, silence, fear and love. As he writes, "Personal myth seeks to unpack the implicit structures of biblical and kabbalistic thought on our inner emotional and imaginative lives." Rabbi Gafni differentiates the study of personal myth from that of the more controversial national myth, which generations of Jewish thinkers have wrestled with. His aim is to write books that are serious and accessible; he aspires to write like Heschel, Buber and Soloveitchik. His publisher compares him to con- temporary spiritual healers and writers like Ram Dass, M. Scott Peck and John Bradshaw. With humility, Rabbi Gafni likes to think of them as his "holy chevre" — other spiritual figures who also don't come from the main- stream but have a deep and wide ;each. Rabbi Gafni's paradigm for the future is the image of a symphony, where everyone plays his own instru- ment while listening deeply to the other musicians. "From that diversity, music emerges," he explains. "This is not about an insular, tri- umphalist Judaism. It's not about show- ing we are better. In a symphony we need to be playing the Jewish instru- ments. While we can dabble in other instruments, our primary commitment is to master our own, with all the com- mitment and energy it requires." ❑ 7-LAYER CAKE WITH ALL DAIRY TRAYS DAIRY POACHED SALMON TRAY • Nova Lox • Poached Salmon w/dill sauce • Tuna Salad • Egg Salad • Farmer's Salad • Swiss & American Cheeses • Cream Cheese • Tomatoes • Onions • Cucumbers • Scallions * Olives • Fresh N.Y.
